Management Remote Access Setup Guide via OpenVPN

Important Notes:

  • You will need to connect to DeLeo Wi-Fi for the initial setup process to configure OpenVPN, once configured OpenVPN can be used to access DeLeoServer files from anywhere with an internet connection
  • Always connect to VPN first before accessing the server

MAC Computer Setup

Step 1: Install OpenVPN

  1. Download OpenVPN Connect from openvpn.net by clicking here
  2. Save it to your Downloads folder
  3. Navigate to your Downloads and double click on the .dmg file to install
  4. You will be prompted by the following screen asking which installer to choose. If your MAC is from 2023 or newer, select Mac with Apple Silicon chip
  1. Click through the installer, agree to the terms and conditions and select “Install for all users of this computer”
  1. Use the default install location and select Install, you may be prompted to enter your password
  2. Open Finder and under Applications double-click to launch OpenVPN Connect

Step 2: Configure OpenVPN

  1. In OpenVPN Connect, click upload configuration file at the bottom
  1. Navigate to the Management share drive and the VPN Setup subfolder, if you do not have access to this folder please contact your administrator
  2. Select the .ovpn configuration file
  3. You should see the following screen once the configuration has been imported
  1. Click the hamburger menu (three stacked horizontal lines) in the upper left corner
  2. Select “My Profiles”
  3. Select the pencil icon to edit the profile
  1. Scroll down and enter your server account username and password
  2. Uncheck “Require External Certificate”, the menu should look like the image below
  1. Click Save Changes
  2. Select the home button to return back to the main menu and press Connect
  3. You should see “Securely Connected”
Step 3: Mount Share Drive
  1. If the share drive has not been mounted on your computer before please click on the link to Mac Computer Initial Setup Instructions
  2. If your share drives have already been mounted you should now be able to access them remotely when OpenVPN is active 

iPhone Setup

Step 1: Install OpenVPN

  1. Open App Store
  2. Search “OpenVPN Connect”
  3. Tap “Get” to install

Step 2: Configure OpenVPN

  1. Open OpenVPN Connect app
  2. Tap “+” (Add Profile)
  3. Select “File” tab
  4. Choose your .ovpn file by navigating to the Management folder and the VPN Setup subfolder
  5. Tap “Add”
  6. Toggle the connection switch ON
  7. Enter username and password when prompted

Step 3: Connect to Server via iOS Files App  (Recommended)

  1. Open the iOS Files app (pre-installed on your iPhone)
  2. Tap “Browse” at the bottom right
  3. Tap the three dots (…) in the top right corner
  4. Tap “Edit”
  5. Tap “Connect to Server”
  6. When asked for “Server” enter IP address (provided by admin)
  7. Tap “Connect”
  8. Select connect as “Registered User”
  9. Enter username and password
  10. Now you can access your files through the native iOS Files app when OpenVPN is running

Windows PC Setup

Step 1: Install OpenVPN

  1. Download OpenVPN Connect from openvpn.net by clicking here
  2. Run the installer
  3. Click “Next” through all prompts
  4. Click “Install”

Step 2: Configure OpenVPN

  1. Open OpenVPN Connect where you will see the following screen
  1. Drag your .ovpn file into the app window by navigating to the Management folder and the VPN Setup subfolder
  2.  Click Import to confirm
  3. You will now see the server profile has been imported
  4. Select the menu (three lines) in the upper left hand corner
  5. Select My Profiles
  6. Click on the pencil icon to edit
  1. Scroll down and enter your server username and password
  2. Uncheck the “Require External Certificate” option
  3. Scroll down and select Save Changes
Step 3: Test Connection
  1. Select Connect and you should see “Securely Connected!”
  2. You may now use your computer to access the server as you would on DeLeo Wi-Fi

    2. If your share drives have already been mounted you should now be able to access them remotely when OpenVPN is active
